How to Make an OC: A Beginner's Guide

Learn how to make an OC step by step — role, silhouette, signature trait, palette, reference sheet — and how AI can generate the art for free.

Character design process from rough silhouette sketches to a finished original character

Step 1: Start with a role, not a look

The most common beginner mistake is designing a costume before designing a character. Start with one sentence: "a lop-eared hare who maps roads that only exist at night". The role — courier, cartographer, guardian — decides the outfit, the props, and the expression. A look without a role produces a mannequin.

Stuck for ideas? Use a random combination generator like OC ideas to get a species, role, and twist in one click.

Step 2: Block the silhouette

Before any detail, check whether the character reads as a flat black shape. Hare ears, feathered wings, a broad hat, twin tails — the big shapes are what make an OC recognizable at avatar size. If the silhouette is boring, adding buckles will not save it.

Step 3: Add exactly one signature trait

Pick a single memorable detail and let it carry the design: one unnatural eye, a broken pocket watch, wings that do not match. Signature traits work because they imply a story — people immediately ask why. Five "special" details at once cancel each other out.

Step 4: Lock a small palette

Two base colors plus one accent beats a rainbow. A useful formula: one neutral (ash grey, cream), one mood color (moss, dusk purple), one accent used only on the signature trait (ember red, violent pink). The accent becomes the character's "brand color" across every future drawing.

Step 5: Produce a reference sheet

A reference sheet is the standard format for sharing OCs: full body, clean background, and ideally a front/side/back turnaround. It is what other artists — and the whole fandom ecosystem — expect when you say "here is my OC".

Step 6: Iterate fast with AI

This is where AI genuinely helps. Instead of redrawing a whole sheet to test a different ear shape, you can generate a dozen variations in minutes and keep the one that clicks. A good workflow:

  • Write the concept as one sentence (species + role + twist).
  • Generate 3-5 variations, changing one trait at a time.
  • Keep the winner, then regenerate with small tweaks until it feels right.
  • Save the final prompt — it is your OC's DNA.
