What is PhotoCraft?
PhotoCraft is a free, open-source image editor for Windows, macOS and Linux, built in Rust by the ArtCraft team and positioned as an early Photoshop alternative. It opens, edits and saves layered PSD files natively, renders on the GPU, and passed 50,000 GitHub stars within two weeks of its September 2026 release (github.com/storytold/photocraft).
It is a clean-room reimplementation of a Photoshop-style editor — not a port, not a wrapper — running on a native GPU compositor (Metal, Vulkan, DirectX 12 or WebGPU) instead of Electron. The pitch is simple: "If you know Photoshop, you already know PhotoCraft." Same menus, same shortcuts, zero subscription.
PhotoCraft download: official links for Windows, macOS & Linux
Every PhotoCraft download is free. There are exactly two official sources — use either:
- GitHub Releases (recommended) — all installers for all operating systems, plus SHA256 checksums: github.com/storytold/photocraft/releases
- ArtCraft official page — product overview plus the ArtCraft Launcher installer: getartcraft.com/apps/photocraft
On the releases page (v0.7.0, published October 11, 2026) you will find:
- Windows — MSI installers for x64, x86 and ARM64, plus a portable build you can run from any folder. Installers are code-signed.
- macOS — a single universal DMG that runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Signed and notarized, so it passes Gatekeeper cleanly.
- Linux — Flatpak, AppImage, deb and rpm packages covering x86_64 and aarch64.
- Everything else — a riscv64 tarball, a FreeBSD 14 build, and a WebAssembly version that runs in the browser with nothing installed.
One expectation to set before you click: the project labels itself an early alpha. Core editing is fast and stable, but corners exist — read the release notes before updating mid-project.
Also beware of name collisions: several unrelated mobile photo apps are also called "PhotoCraft", and lookalike domains exist. The two links above are the only official ones.
How to install PhotoCraft
Windows
Download the MSI matching your CPU — x64 for most PCs, ARM64 for Snapdragon laptops — and run it. Prefer no installer at all? Grab the portable build, unzip it anywhere, and launch the executable directly.
macOS
Open the DMG and drag PhotoCraft into Applications. Because the build is signed and notarized it opens on first click — no right-click dance needed.
Linux and BSD
Use whichever channel your distribution prefers: the Flatpak, the single-file AppImage (chmod +x and run), or the deb/rpm packages. riscv64 and FreeBSD 14 builds are on the same releases page.
No install at all: the web build
The WebAssembly build runs the same editor in a modern browser — useful for trying PhotoCraft before committing, or on a locked-down machine.
Verify the download (optional)
Every release ships a SHA256SUMS.txt. Check a file against it before installing:

If you have used Photoshop, the layout is deliberately familiar: menu bar, tool options, canvas, and a right dock for layers. Under the hood the feature list is already deep for an alpha:
- 67 tools — selections, crops, text, shapes, and a real brush engine with pen pressure, tilt and shape dynamics.
- Full layer stack — groups, masks, clipping masks, smart objects and smart filters, 16 adjustment layers and 27 blend modes.
- Professional color — 8/16/32-bit RGB, CMYK, Lab and Grayscale with ICC color management and soft proofing.
- Automation — Actions, a command palette, and 500+ commands drivable from the CLI, a JSON control channel, or an MCP server (yes, AI coding agents can drive it — see our REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) guide for that world).
File support goes well beyond PSD and PSB: layered TIFF, OpenRaster, PDN, SVG imported as editable layers, plus read-only Affinity and HEIC files. Performance is a headline feature — a radius-180 Gaussian blur on a 3.6-megapixel image completes in under a second.
PhotoCraft vs Photoshop
The honest, current comparison — including where PhotoCraft loses:
| PhotoCraft | Photoshop | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free, open source (MIT / Apache-2.0) | Subscription |
| PSD files | Native open, edit and save (PSD + PSB) | Native (it is Adobe's format) |
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD, web | Windows, macOS |
| AI features | On-device selection only — no cloud, no account | Full generative AI suite |
| Plugins | No Photoshop plugin compatibility yet | Huge plugin ecosystem |
| Maturity | Early alpha (v0.7.0, October 2026) | Industry standard for decades |
The PSD compatibility numbers are the strongest card: on the psd-tools corpus PhotoCraft renders 307 of 309 files identically, and all 116 shape layers match Photoshop's pixels. Round-trips preserve layers and blend modes.
The project's own caveat is worth repeating: it is "not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work" — generative AI, roughly 15 tools, deep typography and plugin support are still on the to-do list. For learning image editing, hobby work and PSD touch-ups on any OS (especially Linux), the price-performance case is already hard to beat.
Is PhotoCraft safe to download?
From the official sources, yes — and there are concrete signals to check, not just promises:
- Signed builds — Windows installers are code-signed; the macOS DMG is signed and notarized.
- Checksums — every release ships SHA256SUMS.txt so you can verify downloads yourself.
- Open source — dual MIT / Apache-2.0 license, 1,700+ tests, a published security policy, and offline operation with no account and no telemetry.
- Clear ownership — built by the ArtCraft team, with an explicit disclaimer that it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Adobe.
This is an independent guide, not official PhotoCraft documentation. And because we are an OC-maker site: if your creative work is characters rather than photos, the free AI OC generator builds original characters in about 10 seconds — no download required.
FAQ
Is PhotoCraft free?
Yes — completely. PhotoCraft is open source under a dual MIT OR Apache-2.0 license, so the full editor is free on every platform with no account, no subscription and no feature paywall. The same is true of its Linux and web builds.
Is PhotoCraft safe to download?
From official sources, yes. Windows installers are code-signed, the macOS build is signed and notarized, and every release ships a SHA256SUMS.txt you can verify. Only use getartcraft.com/apps/photocraft or the storytold/photocraft GitHub releases — unrelated mobile apps and lookalike domains share the name.
Does PhotoCraft open PSD files?
Yes, natively — PhotoCraft opens, edits and saves layered PSD and PSB files without conversion. On the psd-tools compatibility corpus it renders 307 of 309 files identically, and all 116 shape layers in the corpus match Photoshop's pixels.
Is PhotoCraft a real Photoshop replacement?
Not yet, by its own admission. The interface mirrors Photoshop's menus and shortcuts and PSD round-trips are strong, but the project labels itself an early alpha: generative AI, some tools, deep typography and Photoshop plugin support are still missing. For learning, hobby work and PSD touch-ups it already runs well.
What are PhotoCraft's system requirements?
The project publishes no formal spec sheet. In practice: most Windows 10 and 11 PCs run it, the macOS build is a universal binary, Linux builds cover x86_64 and aarch64, and a WebAssembly build runs in any modern browser with no install at all.
Who makes PhotoCraft?
The ArtCraft team — the open-source studio behind the ArtCraft AI image and video tools. PhotoCraft is a clean-room reimplementation of a Photoshop-style editor written in Rust; it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Adobe.
